A walk to the Menaglio Mill

The wonder of a journey into the heart of Val Rogna, between nature and tradition

Just a short walk from the village of Teglio, nestled in the silence of the Val Rogna woodlands, stands the Antico Mulino Menaglio (the old Menaglio Mill), a place that tells an ancient story of work, nature and peasant traditions. It can be reached by walking along the Rogna stream, which flows through forests and steep slopes, on the border with the neighbouring municipality of Chiuro.
The Menaglio Mill is the last working water mill of the ten that once ground grain on the left bank of the stream. Inside, visitors can watch the milling of cereals grown by local small producers. The upper floors house an exhibition route that tells the story of mountain agricultural life, food traditions and the importance of alpine cereals; in particular buckwheat, known here as furmentùn. From these traditional crops were born the most representative dishes of Valtellina cuisine: pizzoccheri, polenta taragna, sciatt, chisciöi and the traditional dumèga soup.
