For over a thousand years, the small Romanesque chapel of San Fedelino has revealed itself as a secret treasure to those who arrive by lake or through the woods. It seems that nature, over all this time, has adopted it; claiming it as its own, just as it claims the trees and the mountains. This little temple has earned its special bond with the surrounding landscape by resisting, time and again, the rising waters of the river Mera, wars, and the interventions of people who turned it into a shelter according to their humble needs. But in this place, every wound has become experience, and we can now admire its marks as one admires decorations and honours.
Inside, only a few traces remain of the vivid colours of the past, but from the fresco of Christ Pantocrator his message still emerges with power: Ego sum via, veritas et vita — words that resonate as an invitation to slow down, resist and carry on.
The chapel of San Fedelino can be reached on foot from the church of S. Giovanni all’Archetto, accessible by car from Era di Samolaco or from Novate Mezzola along via Trivulzia. From Novate Mezzola by boat (on request).
